The Nuclear Medicine department is a multi-camera practice with all Siemens gamma cameras, including a state-of-the-art Siemens Symbia SPECT/CT multidetector scanner. This technology allows for the most cutting-edge diagnostic capability for patients attending the practice.
Nuclear Medicine is the field of medical imaging that uses minute quantities of radiopharmacaceuticals to diagnose and treat various diseases and conditions. Using tracers that show changes to the function of multiple organs, Nuclear Medicine studies can often show abnormalities much earlier than other forms of imaging, such as x-rays and CT scans.
Nuclear Medicine procedures are extremely safe, and there is no risk to patients with previous histories of iodine contrast reactions or renal impairment. The radiation doses used are very low and comparable to many other diagnostic procedures used in medical imaging.
Our technology uses combined SPECT/CT imaging. This allows us to maximise the diagnostic accuracy of our studies by combining the unique functional information provided by Nuclear Medicine imaging with the excellent anatomical detail provided by multidetector CT technology using our special low radiation dose protocols.
The Nuclear Medicine department of North Shore Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is operated by Professor Paul Roach and Dr Elizabeth Bernard. Both are highly regarded specialists locally and nationally, and each has over 15 years’ experience as medical specialists in the discipline. In addition to being credentialed Nuclear Medicine specialists, both are Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), members of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Physicians in Nuclear Medicine (ANZAPNM) and both have clinical academic appointments at the University of Sydney.
The close working relationship between our Nuclear Medicine physicians and radiologists allows us to consult each other as appropriate and to optimise the diagnostic results of patient studies performed throughout the practice.
